Habersham Hills Cinema, which owns Regal Cinemases in the UK, is the latest retailer to roll out its own digital cinema apps, and it’s not the first to do so.
However, the app is much more ambitious than Regal’s predecessor.
Here’s how the company describes its new app: “In this app, customers can discover new movies and TV shows, access new movie and TV episodes and search for the most popular titles.
In addition, customers will be able to access their favourites, discover movies and tv shows on demand, watch exclusive content from the studios and retailers and buy films directly from the cinema.”
Regal, which is part of the Disney-owned Walt Disney Studios, has been investing heavily in its digital cinema strategy.
It launched its digital subscription service in December last year, which allows users to rent movies on demand for a fee.
“We are committed to bringing the most up-to-date cinema content to audiences worldwide, and Regal Cinema is the next step in this journey,” Regal chairman and CEO Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement.
“The new digital platform is fully compliant with Disney’s Digital Entertainment Distribution Rules, and we are excited to roll it out to customers.”
It will allow users to access titles on demand in a number of formats, including DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-Ray, as well as over-the-top (OTT) streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
It is also available for purchase on Amazon Prime Instant Video, and is available in the US and Australia.
The new app will be available for iPhones and Android smartphones.
