The Regal Cinema chain announced on Thursday that it had closed its doors indefinitely after two of its five cinemas in downtown Atlanta shut their doors.
The chain had been in business for decades, and it had been operating in the city since the late 1970s.
The chain had not yet announced a date for a new location, but its current location at the former Georgia Dome in Cobb County was the last of the chain’s three in the state.
Regal had previously announced that it would shutter its remaining two cinemas this year, and the Atlanta area is one of the few remaining stops for the chain in the U.S.
As the chain has been shuttering cinemas across the country, many in Atlanta have taken to social media to share their frustrations.
The closure of the three remaining Regal cinemases was especially shocking, according to Georgia State University’s Georgia Tech Center for Film Studies, which has been studying the impact of the closures.
“It’s sad to see that these theaters are closing.
It’s really sad,” Georgia Tech Film Studies senior curator of film and film history Jennifer Schmit said.
“I think we need more of them, and we need them more often.”
The Atlanta Public Library is working with the Georgia Film and Film Studies Center to find another location for the chains cinema.”
This is a loss for Georgia, and to see it happening in a city like Atlanta, it’s really hard to see.”

The Atlanta Film Institute, which is the state’s oldest film museum, announced that the film archive at the center would be shut down in 2019.
The Atlanta Film Museum was founded in 1959 and is the oldest surviving film museum in the United States.
The film archive includes film and television archives from all eras, including film made before 1954.
It was not immediately clear how many Regal locations were still in operation.
In 2016, the chain was the only one of its kind in the country.
The chains locations in New York City and Los Angeles were also shut down.
In February, Regal said that it was planning to close its last three Atlanta locations.
In addition to the closure of Regal, the Atlanta Film Center also said that the Atlanta-based company was also shutting down its film festival, the film program at its Museum of the City of Atlanta and its Film Festival Atlanta.
